The recent order backlog of the Toyota Prius and the announcement of the Chevy Volt electric car indicate a growing momentum in the hybrid and battery electric vehicle markets. However, the high costs of advanced batteries have prevented large manufacturers from entering this market.

"For the average SUV or light pickup truck driver costs of electricity is as little as $7 to $25 a month, compared to $200 to $400 for gasoline.
